"Baptism"
Rev. Diane Maodush-Pitzer
"On Epiphany in 1956, I was baptized in Christ at
Bethel Reformed Church in Harvey, Illinios. It was a wonderful day that
brought my mother, a life-long member of the Reformed Church in America,
and my father, a baptized Serbian Orthodox who moved into the Reformed
Church upon marriage, to the font at the front of that small life-filled
parish. As the waters of baptism flowed I was sealed by the Holy Spirit
and marked as Christ's own forever. The congregation promised to pray
for me, to support me and to encourage me, and that they did as I traveled
a long and winding road toward ordination in October of 1983.
For the past ten years, I have served as the founding
director of WITNESS, a non-profit interfaith center of mentoring, advocacy
and support, working to bring women into fuller leadership in the faith
community. I have walked beside women who were baptized as little girls,
heard the call to minister in Christ's name, and now long to give faithful
witness to the world to the Good News of Jesus Christ. It has been my
call these last ten years to support and encourage them as I was by the
people o Bethel, Harvey. With my husband, Clayton Maodush-Pitzer, I treasure
raising our three sons--Dane, Max and Nicholas -- to live fully into who
they are as baptized children of a great and loving God.
